Dark skin for centuries has been perceived by the global beauty standard, set by more developed countries, as a negative thing. I love that she captured the way this skin color hits the light and has many different dimensions. I also love that the head wrap is also a big part of the photo. We have more American versions of these such as the durag or bonet. Both things I've been made fun of by Western culture for wearing as it's depicted as “not classy” or “ghetto” I think that the “Atlas of beauty” had a deeper meaning wether she had the intention or not to de centralize western and Asian beauty standards which coincidentally align with eurocentric ideologies and whiteness as “inherently beautiful”. 

 

Michala Noroc is a Romanian photographer who is most known for her “Atlas of beauty” where she, for 11 years photographing women from 100 different countries with the goal to show “true beauty’ and distaste with how the media has warped our perspectives of beauty. She's written 3 books including the Atlas of beauty in 2017, The power of women in 1999 and Girls of the world in 2023.

I personally love this one a lot. I love the general photography of it but also her hilights and bows she's done her name up despite her condition whatever that may be it hasn't stopped her from anything clearly. 

Another one of my personal favorites but I think I just like sunlight at this point, I like the simplicity of it and the bagginess of the dress I think nowadays it's hard to find such beautiful but simplistic clothing like this. Everything is emphized on the shape of the body and made to be “aesthetic” and not worn. At least for women. 
This girl reminds me of Billie Ellish, I like that she's in a male dominated field especially considering this is one of the few on her website depicting eurocentric beauty standards.

I love this one mainly because it reminds me of mom, I also love the head wrap and the egg apron.

Nov,6th outside of US immigration and customs enforcement in Portland Oregon. Officers came out in response to less than 20 protesters no teargas was administered that night thankfully.  A close up shot of the same officers from the first photo.  I asked this construction worker at 9:08 pm if I could take pictures of her after explaining the class project. She gladly accepted, I tried to explain the blog and where she could find it but she said " woah woah woah, I don't know all that technology stuff" so I opted to text them to her instead. She was so so sweet and kind and was so excited I wish I could show her the blog.  I unfortunately don't know much about what happened and why they were there I only saw them for about 20 minutes while door dashing on highway 20 on the way to Philomath. Moon and White Lies

Going to steal tha moon! in Albany OR near an elementary school.  These were the photos from the white lies party I went to. It was very fun I talked to these girls after I took the photos. in Corvallis the concept of the "white lies" is that you're supposed to write something on your skirt that is obviously a lie.  I love how free these next two photos look. Nothing but dance, sweat, energy and fashion. The girl in the second photo told me her skirt was just 12 scarves tied together.

My First Blog

 HI I'm Ashlie I'm studying journalism; I love to read and sad music. I work with disabled children and line cooking. I took this class to give me a better idea of journalism as a whole, I don't have too much experience in photography other than a class i took in freshman year of high school. my three goals are: 1. To try to take more protest photos as i frequent them. 2. to learn to take more accurate and professional photos. 3. hopefully learn somewhat about journalism as a whole.
